Comparative Airline Ticket Price Indexes

15%

Our proprietary airline ticket price indexes summarize relative pricing dynamics across airlines and time. They are a highly interpretable measure of how each airline's ticket prices are evolving with time, as well as in comparison to its competitors.

To interpret the ticket price indexes, compare the value of the index for one airline on a single date to the value of the index for another airline and/or another date. The difference if price index value is a proxy for the relative difference in the average ticket prices for the corresponding airlines and dates.

For example, if the price index for a particular airline this week is 10% higher than it was for the previous week, that indicates that ticket prices for that airline were on average approximately 10% higher this week than last week. Similarly, if the price index this week for one airline is 10% higher than the index for another airline, that indicates that ticket prices for the first airline were approximately 10% higher than those for the second airline.

Note that comparisons between ticket price index values are only approximate. Inaccuracy can be caused by the differing and evolving mix of routes serviced by each airline, among other factors. Price index analysis should be done directionally rather than absolutely.
